lyrics

God has the hands of a hangman, waiting with a noose,
Sometimes he'll throw his loving arms around you,
Other times he won't let loose,
But it's him and him alone, who decides when you will go,
And whether it is heaven or it is hell where you will call your home

Now there's a place where the old creek bends,
Where I'll go to meet my end,
You won't be seeing me 'round here again,
I took my coins and I put 'em in the boatman's hands,

Because there's a hurt to deep to tame,
Like a broken horse without a name,
But in my mind darlin' I can't stay,
I've been looking, but I never found a better way.

In fear I threw my stones in the water, forgive my vanity,
See that mirror held inside its hands; my hate,
But I'm not the only one who's ever hid in shame,
There was a hazy day, a rose bush,
And a longing that will never quite feel the same.

And now I'll climb the tallest tree,
Just to see what I can see,
There's a song playing on the breeze,
And a black crow flying 'cause he knows he's free,

And now he's tied it 'round my throat,
This rope like a winter coat,
Well I hope this pain ain't slow,
But as I go, won't you tell me that you'll miss me so?

In fear I threw my stones in the water, forgive my vanity,
See that mirror held inside its hands; my hate,
But I'm not the only one who's ever hid in shame,
There was a hazy day, a rose bush,
And a longing that will never quite feel the same.
